Formidable Women: A Women’s History Month Essay & Poetry Contest

To celebrate our 99th anniversary and to kick off our 100th anniversary celebration, we’re honoring the founding women of Phoenix Writers Club and Women’s History Month with our Formidable Women Essay and Poetry Contest.

Contest Rules

  • Open to Phoenix Writers Club members and all Arizona residents. 

Theme:

  • Formidable Women. Submit an essay or poem, title, date of submission, author’s legal name. 
  • Entries accepted beginning January 1, 2025. Deadline is February 1, 2025

Essay: No more than 1926 words, 12-point Times New Roman font. Longer essays will not be considered. 

Poems: From 19-26 lines. 

  • Essays and poems must be in English, preferably unpublished and original. 
  • Open to writers 18 years and older. 
  • Fiction and non-fiction essays and poems should promote the theme of the contest: Formidable Women. Essays promoting extreme foul language, offensive topics such as sexism, racism, self-harm or violence, and any identified AI generated pieces will not be considered serious entries. 
  • Winning essays, including Honorable Mentions, become the property of PWC for the first-year printing and may be published electronically or in print. 

Winners notified March 1, 2025

1st place: $100 check, one-year PWC membership, lunch at awards ceremony, certificate, published essay on PWC website, newsletter and other publications. 

2nd place: $50 check, one-year PWC membership, lunch at awards ceremony, certificate, published essay on PWC website, newsletter and other publications. 

3rd place: $25 check, one-year PWC membership, lunch at awards ceremony, certificate, published essay on PWC website, newsletter and other publications. 

2-Honorable mentions: Awards ceremony, certificate, published essay on PWC website, newsletter.
