Wednesdays with Cora
By Linda Davis Watters
Honorable Mention Poem,
Formidable Women Essay and Poetry Contest
Old, tired but still rising with pride
Cora drags her left leg angled to one side
Leaning forward but with a steady gait
Moving onward, heading for the gate
Up the street and turning the next corner
The church steeple lights evening wonder
A beacon of light to show the way
Extends a warm hand of welcome today
“Come in Cora”
In the dark of night, inside the church
Steeped in unwavering faith
The crucifix forever shining bright
Against a crescent, moonlit sky
Slowly kneeling at the altar
Straining steadily not to falter
Scriptures flowing from a southern tongue
Old hymns of bygone days wrung.
In perfect pitch
Alone in the dark sanctuary with the Savior
Rejoicing in praise and in glory
The greatest gift – a long journey
Abundant joy and thanks for grace and mercy
Every Wednesday for Cora
Hallelujah!! Hallelujah!! Hallelujah!!
