Pioneering Spirit (2026)

PWC Centennial Year Founders Contest: Pioneering Spirit

On our 100th anniversary, the Phoenix Writers Club wanted to celebrate the pioneering spirit of the witty Western women who founded the club in 1926 after being denied entry to the press club. As the contest guidelines stated, we invited local writers to submit an essay or a poem about the pioneering spirit that has defined Phoenix and Arizona for over one hundred years.

It was a very difficult decision for the judge. After much deliberation, they selected the following winners and honorable mentions. All four contributions will be featured in the Spring issue of the Phoenix Writers Club online literary magazine, The Desert Willow.
