About the Phoenix Writers Club
In 1926, Phoenix Writers Club (PWC) was founded by a feisty group of women journalists who weren’t allowed into the men’s journalism club, so they began their own writing club, the Phoenix Writers Club.
Over its long history, Phoenix Writers Club grew to be not just for women and not just for journalists, but for all interested in the craft of writing.
Our mission is to provide a space where writers and readers can join together, discuss, and grow their skills and knowledge in the craft of writing.
We hope to see you at a meeting soon!

The Benefits of Joining Phoenix Writers Club
The number one benefit of being a club member is in our slogan, “Writers helping writers since 1926.” Your writing will be helped by other writers, and you will have the opportunity to help other writers.
How do we do it? Here are a few of the supporting benefits we offer:
Our biggest benefit is our monthly meetings, currently held every third Saturday of the month (except July and August) from 10 – noon at the Devonshire Senior Center. Learn more on our Meetings Page.
The club’s monthly “Stimulus” newsletter is a wealth of information about our activities and writing around the state. Always helpful and entertaining, it keeps members connected even when they can’t attend meetings.
PWC keeps up our social media presence on the Phoenix Writers Club Facebook Group. It is the fastest way to get information, see what our members are up to, and find information about upcoming activities.
Every member of the club gets a free Author’s page where you can share a picture, a biography, links to you around the web, and information about your published or self-published writing. You can see our members here, and get information about submitting content for your own page here.
We love to read, celebrate, and share our members’ content. Contests have been the primary way we do this since the club was founded. We have at least one contest a year. You can keep up with our most recent contests here.
Members are welcome to join our moderated critique group, where we share our work and offer constructive feedback. They meet online twice a month and many have found this group very helpful in keeping their writing projects moving forward.
One of our longest-standing groups within the club is the prompt group, WIG. They meet online twice a month, and the moderator shares a writing prompt. Then everyone has 10 minutes to write something. The rest of the time is spent sharing the results.
In the fall of 2025, PWC launched its own literary magazine, The Desert Willow, on Substack. It is a quarterly publication sharing pieces written by PWC members and chosen by the editorial board or the winners of the writing contests. Any group member can submit and the whole internet can read what is published there.
PWC is a great way for local writers to stay connected to the writing community at large. We share information about other groups and any events they have planned that might be of interest to our members. The best way to get this information is in Stimulus, the club’s newsletter. Our connections with other groups include discounts to events like the creative writing workshops at ASU, community book fairs, and writing events sponsored by other organizations.
You can learn more about joining on our Membership Page, where you will also find a form to share your interest in joining or ask any questions you may have
